When your customers actually ring
Most businesses staff the phone for the hours they work. A significant share of enquiries arrive in the hours they do not.

There is a mismatch at the heart of most small business phone lines. Opening hours are set around the work, and enquiry hours are set around the customer's life, and those two things are not the same shape.
The gap is where the expensive calls sit, because those callers are choosing between whoever is available at that moment.
The early morning window
Between about seven and nine, people ring on the commute, before work, or before a shift. Trades ordering materials and hire equipment ring in this window because they are on the way to site.
Most businesses in those supply chains open at eight thirty or nine, so a real volume of ready to buy calls hits nothing at all.
Lunchtime
Between twelve and two is when employed people can make personal calls: booking a dentist, chasing a solicitor, arranging a viewing.
It is also when small businesses are at their thinnest on the phone, because staff are at lunch and clinics are running through. The overlap is unfortunate and very consistent.
Easier to hear than to read about
Callwise answers your phone the way this article describes. Ring it, ask it something awkward, and see whether it holds up.

Between six and ten is when people deal with the things they postponed. Property portal traffic peaks around nine in the evening. Kitchen, bathroom and home improvement enquiries cluster on Sunday afternoons and weekday evenings.
For estate agents, home improvement companies, aesthetic clinics and anything sold to couples who need to discuss it, this is the primary enquiry window and almost nobody staffs it.
Weekends
Saturday is the highest volume day for salons, garages, opticians and anything people do with their own time. It is also the day those businesses are busiest serving customers in front of them, so the phone loses.
Sunday is quieter in volume and higher in intent. People research, decide and ring on Sunday, and whoever answers gets the work on Monday.
The seasonal spikes
Some of the worst missed call weeks of the year are predictable to the day, which means they can be planned for.
- The first cold snap, for heating engineers and plumbers
- The morning after a storm, for roofers, tree surgeons and glaziers
- The first three weeks of January, for gyms, family solicitors and accountants
- Late January, for anything touching self assessment
- July and August, for pest control
- November and December, for restaurants, spas and anything selling vouchers
What to do about it
Pull your call logs and plot unanswered calls by hour and weekday. It takes twenty minutes and it will show you the shape of your own leak rather than the general one.
Then decide which hours are worth covering. For most businesses the answer is evenings and weekends, and the reason is not volume, it is that those callers have nobody else answering either, so the competition for them is weak.
Questions people ask
Are out of hours callers actually serious?
Generally more serious, not less. Someone ringing at eight in the evening has usually decided to act rather than idly enquiring.
Is it worth answering at 3am?
For emergency trades, absolutely, and those are your highest value jobs. For most other businesses the value is in capturing the enquiry and booking it, not in doing the work at that hour.

What a missed call actually costs
A missed call leaves no trace anywhere in your business. No enquiry, no note, no record. Which is exactly why it is the easiest loss to ignore and the most expensive to keep making.
Why nobody leaves a voicemail any more
Leaving a message is a commitment. It asks the caller to wait, to be available when you ring back, and to trust that you will. Most people ringing a business for the first time will not make that commitment.
The weeks your phone volume doubles
Every trade has two or three weeks a year when demand arrives all at once. They are entirely predictable, and almost nobody staffs for them.
Hear it answer a call
Ring the assistant and ask it the awkward question your customers always ask. If you like what you hear, it will book you in there and then.
